The American Academy of Family Physicians defines a Family Physician as ... "A physician who is educated and
trained in family practice -- a broadly encompassing medical specialty. Family physicians possess unique
attitudes, skills and knowledge which qualify them to provide continuing and comprehensive medical care, health
maintenance and preventive services to each member of the family regardless of sex, age, or type of problem, be
it biological, behavior, or social. These specialists, because of their background and interactions with the
family are best qualified to serve as each patient's advocate in all health-related matters, including the
appropriate use of consultants, health services, and community resources."

Dr. Carr has been with Piedmont Medical since July 1992. He completed his
undergraduate studies at Duke University in 1984. He then attended the Medical University of South Carolina
and received his Doctorate of Medicine in 1989. After completing a 3-year residency in Family Practice at
Greenville Hospital systems in Greenville, SC in 1992, he and his wife Melinda returned to the Triangle.
They have two boys, Paul and Josiah. Dr. Carr and Melinda enjoy all things DUKE, sports, spending time with
their boys and travel. |

Joan joined the PMA family in April 2001. She received her Bachelor's degree in Nursing in 1995 from the
State University of New York at Brockport. She and her husband Andy relocated to the Triangle and she
worked in adult internal medicine at Duke for 5 years while working on her Master's Degree in Nursing. In
May of 2000 she received her MS from Duke University and completed her Family Nurse Practitioner licensure. She is a
board certified Registered Nurse and Family Nurse Practitioner. Joan and Andy have two children, Kate and A.J. They all enjoy sports and many outdoor activities. |
